Jennifer + Darren | Mallard Island | Forever Lucky Films

Even if I didn't have twins to watch three days a week this year would rank number one.  Ninety percent of my shoots are referrals and it's very hard to turn down a referral.  So in cases I'm booked I have a few very talented people film the wedding and I handle editing duties.

Jennifer and Darren's wedding at Mallard Island Yacht Club was one such date.  Super nice couple and the photographer was Andy Todes whom I count among the best photographers to work (and get to work with him again this Saturday). Kris King handled the camera for me and sent me some pretty awesome work.  It's fun for me to experience the wedding in the edit suite, this one had a bunch of surprises that I was not expecting.  Once or two of them may have ended up in this highlight. Please enjoy.

Praying Mantis having Dinner

When you get stuck at home watching 9 month old twins you find all kinds of stuff you never noticed around the house. We have a resident mantis that's just been wrecking havoc all summer. Finally, filmed him the other night. Check out how he operates. Music: Nat King Cole - What'll I Do

Halle & David | The Old Mill | Forever Lucky Films

This wedding was a blast. First time I've seen a motorized cooler utilized in a wedding and that takes planning, so you know this was a run planned affair.  The simple elegance of the Old Mill and the fun bunch that filled the place was my inspiration for Halle and David's film.

Rachel + Damon | Forever Lucky Films | Grantville PA

Rachel nailed it. Even her details had details. From vintage books and signs to an ice cream truck were excellent touches that made it memorable. Rain came down just a few miles south but made to the wise choice to avoid their patch of heaven just outside Hershey PA. Bob Dylan is the master. Here he is being covered by, Audra Mae.

Cait + Chris | The Ashford Estate | Forever Lucky Films

The Ashford Estate remains one of the most spectacular locations for a wedding.    Long tree-lined dirt road.  Barn for ceremony.  Bigger 'barn' for the reception and beautiful French Revival styled Mansion.  So, if you're going to choose a location and if it's going to rain you can't find a better spot than Ashford.  Even indoors, every detail was designed to be the backdrop of your dream wedding.  Okay enough about that.

I've been lucky to shot a few weddings for the families involved.  Loved them all and really turned out better that I could have even hoped.   I've mentioned it before but when I edit I have to edit to music I like.  There's no one that I like more than Radiohead, but it took a subtle but intense Gigamesh remix to match the visuals of one of my weddings.

whatwearewatching: Peaking Lights - "Dreamboat"

Peaking Lights have been having a great summer.   I love their album Lucifer and love this video from directors Jordan Redaelli & Jason Miller. Apparently it has something to do with Urban Outfitters which makes sense after watching it. Still cool.

Gen + Matt | Villanova & Overbrook Golf Club | Forever Lucky Films

Gen & Matt's are the perfect match. It all came down to a classroom at Villanova where they spotted each other and as Seinfeld would say - yada, yada yada- then they got married. We weren't there for the yada, but that didn't matta because we were their for the wedding? Fittingly, the wedding was held at the beautiful church at Villanova, followed by the the reception at the spectacular Overbrook Country Club.

Every week I get to meet with different vendors at their venues and they stand out as one of the finest. One of the best photographers you can find, Shea Roggio, did all the heavy lifting and we were lucky to ride his coat tails a bit.

We spent a sweltering day in Stone Harbor filming a house on 91st Street. Amazing property with a huge pool and amazing kitchen. The kitchen ceiling is stunning. I really love this video.  A little different feel.  Music is by Bat For Lashes who I've been a big fan of for some time and new album dropped recently.  David Allen worked the second camera with me. As a note, he got to stand in the shade and I did not.

New Camera Review + Highlight Film

In the week leading to Kasey and Christian's wedding held at the Stone Mill outside York Pa, I had lost faith in my Cannon 7d. The reason was glitch after glitch, so quickly I picked up a Canon 4ti to use as a back up. Smaller and lighter, is not really a plus for me but as a hobbyist this could be nice. What I like about it is the auto focus and a touch screen.

The first wedding I used it was at the aforementioned wedding at the Stone Mill and overall I came away please. Most of the day I used the 1.4 lens I love. No matter what lenses I purchase I usually just use this one almost all day. This lens and my camera became fast friends and I used the auto focus on some beauty shots with foreground and background elements. It also has a pretty decent facial recognition software built in and I tested it with my twin boys with good success. Not quite ready to use auto focus with a bride heading down the aisle towards me, but with good light and a native lens, I may in the future.

It's an inexpensive camera and worth picking up for a backup DSLR for a professional or a primary camera for someone just following their kids around the house or ballpark.

Check out the highlights from Kasey and Christian's party down below.

Joanna + Richard | Philadelphia Wedding | Forever Lucky Films

My birthday is June 3rd and this year I had my biggest celebration over.  Must have had two hundred and fifty turn out.  Musical acts from as far as Italy played their heart out for me.  There were canons shooting rose petals.   Even the dance floor had my initials printed on it.  However there there was a typo because it read 'JDR' and rather than 'JCR'.  There was an amazingly talented and fun photographer Amanda Young shadowing me.   Pretty awesome day all around.

Shockingly, I reviewed the footage and realized the party was not for me, but in fact is was an for a super nice and ridiculously photogenic couple -  Joanna and Richard.     I'll have another birthday but their wedding was unmatched!.

Jillian + Michael | Ocean City Maryland Wedding | Forever Lucky Films

Hooray.   Five minute commute to a wedding.  Such beauty down here in the eastern shore.

As I mentioned on Facebook, a wedding lands right in between a dream and memory.  There were a few moments I had to pinch myself to figure out where I was standing at the moment.

Updates

The Forever Lucky employment rolls have grown. We've hired a new Production Coordinator part time to work on Special Projects and assist on wedding shoots. With a wedding every weekend from now until the year 2027 having a person dedicated to fun projects is something I've been planning for awhile. His name is The Stig and he knows two facts about ducks and their both wrong. Actually it's David Bonnett. He'll be working out of our Berlin office.  He has a great eye and some raw talent that we hope to nurture and grow.

Also in addition to the site and blog, we're elsewhere as well

Knowlton Mansion Wedding | Lindsey + Mark | Forever Lucky Films

I love nothing more than a nice day. It's better than the tastiest food or most refreshing drink. Any day brings opportunity but blue skies and mild temperatures puts it in action. I've had quite a few nice day weddings so far this year. One was Lindsey and Mark's wedding at the Knowlton Mansion, in Philadelphia. Here's a preview of the highlight film.

Avalon

There are some cool things cooking in the Forever Lucky labs. Lots of weddings, but also a lot of other projects. One is for a new client in Avalon. The object is to create spots to set the mood. Of course no one is going to buy a home of this magnitude and beauty from a short film, but it's a small piece in a crowded market to set a product apart.

Jackie + Tommy | Forever Lucky Films

Here's a highlight film from a fun wedding I did last weekend.  I can honestly say I've never seen a bride smile as much as Jackie.  Tommy told me Jackie doesn't like being in front of the camera, but you'd never know it, she moved with a joyous calm all day.

Enjoy.

Cape May Wedding | Jaclyn + Christopher | Forever Lucky Films

I love a wedding that takes place in both in Ocean City (NJ) and Cape May. My two favorite towns in the state. True fact. Nothing bad ever happens in either town. The one exception may be a long wait Sunday mornings at Uncle Bills.

A few years back my brother was married at Congress Hall. So every time I go back I think about one of my favorite weekends. So now Jackie and Chris and their families have their own. What I capture is just part of what gets stored away.

The photographer on this day was Kella MacPhee. I can't say enough about Kella and her photography. I'm always impressed with the ease she does her job. I'm used to seeing photographers have two, three, even four helpers. Check out her work HERE.

Philadelphia Wedding | Marybeth + Kevin | Forever Lucky FIlms

I neglected my blogging duties.  Too busy prepping for an intense summer.   This was the first of the season for me. And the first at Vie, a new venue on Broad Street in Philadelphia.  I don't think Vie will have a Saturday off very often  judging by the location, food and size .  Huge dance floor, projection wall but nothing over the top in terms of decor..  Allows for a lot of flexibility in creating a unique experience.

Check out Marybeth and Kevin's video below and check out Photographer Jim Harris' take here.

Things That Inspire Us

Terrance Malick is a favorite artist of mine.  His films inspire similar times.  Thoughts. Nature.   He's inspired a whole generation of directors, unfortunately those directors don't get the budgets or hype that most, but still create wonderful films that deserve some praise.  One director is Australian Andrew Dominik.    A few years back he directed the under appreciated film The Assassination of Jessee James.  Leave it to an Aussie to capture the beautiful contours of America's vast and open landscape of the 19th century.   Here are two of my favorite scenes from the film.

The first is the films opening.  Narrated by Hugh Ross it sets the atmosphere for what's to come.

Then the even more beautifully shot Money Train sequence. You have to go to the link as embedding was disabled for this.

New Opportunities.

Things are shifting slowly at the studio.  We may be looking at a late spring opening of our gallery.  Perhaps.   Have a number of meetings for weddings this week but also a bunch of commercial work as well.  Details and video to follow....

Anything to Avoid doing my Taxes.

This video falls into the category of a side side side projects.  One part Walt Whitman.  Two Parts Video.

Walt Whiman's inspiration poem Song of the Open Road was the catalyst for this video. I edited it down considerably.   It's a must read pre-road trip.

Sofitel Wedding | Alison & Dan | Forever Lucky Films

Getting unedited footage in the mail is like Christmas for me. Especially with the beautiful locations and talented filmmakers behind the camera like Tom and Jen Mattera. Alison and Dan's wedding started with a First Look at the Radnor Hotel, before shifting to the grand church at Villanova then culminating with a end-of-year reception at the dapper Sofitel Hotel.

For the video, I was drawn to M83's Midnight City and the lyrics that go with it.  They're simple but intertwine wildly with the video.

Waiting in a car
Waiting for a ride in the dark
The night city grows
Look and see her eyes, they glow

Waiting in a car
Waiting for a ride in the dark
Drinking in the lounge
Following the neon signs
[ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsty.com/m83-midnight-city-lyrics.html ]
Waiting for a roar
Looking at the mutating skyline
The city is my church
It wraps me in the sparkling twilight

Waiting in a car
Waiting for the right time
Waiting in a car
Waiting for the right time
Waiting in a car
Waiting for the right time
Waiting in a car
Waiting for the right time
Waiting in a car
Waiting for a ride in the dark

Collingswood Wedding | Fran + Mike | Forever Lucky Fillms

Soon after booking Fran and Mike's wedding. My wife learn she was pregnant with our first child. Due date Jan 15, 2012. Fran and Mike's wedding date, December 30th. I thought, whew dodged a close one (also booked Dec 31 more on that day later in the week). Then a 12 weeks in, we found out our first child was actually two children and the date was now Christmas week.

Over the last few years I've worked with some great videographers and filmmakers. I was fortunate that Tom Mattera and his wife were available. They shot some outstanding footage for us and I've been experiencing Fran and Mike's wedding at the edit suite. Photography was captured by Andy Todes....check out his website here

Squaw Valley Wedding | Ava + Chip | Forever Lucky Films

So Ava wanted a wedding back-dropped with the glory of fall in Squaw Valley while Chip wanted a winter wedding back-dropped with snow capped peaks.  Initially Ava won setting a date early November.  The day before the wedding the trees lined the valley with colorful foliage.  Then the clouds came and the next day those leaves were covered with snow.

The first snow of the season fell as Ava and her bridesmaids prepped at Plumpjack Inn and continued all day. I would have to say it was the coldest outdoor wedding I've done, maybe will ever do, but everyone was prepared and there really was no better place to tie the knot that day.

Here are some of the highlights of there jubilant celebration.  In the end everyone got that what they wanted.  Snow, colorful leaves and most importantly an epic party with family and friends (plus a win from their Alma Mater Oregon).
